About Bo
Bo is originally from The Netherlands but left there over 20 years ago and has been living in the Highlands for the last 8 years.
She brings a wealth of unique individual experience to her counselling and psychotherapy work. She has a deep and longstanding practice of meditation and yoga, which impacts her work in with clients, making it very mindful and present-moment focused.
Fascinated first and foremost by people and by the eternal question of “what it means to be human”, she studied philosophy and then completed a Masters degree in Cultural Anthropology and Non-Western sociology. After travelling the world, she pursued a career as a documentary photographer. Through working with people in that capacity she realised that what was most meaningful to her about that work was the opportunity to connect deeply with another person and enter into their lifeworld with them.
And through that circuitous route she eventually arrived at psychotherapy. She trained in Buddhist Psychology and has since completed further training in ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) – a mindfulness based Cognitive Behavioural approach. Working with sexual violence and trauma through the Kent Rape Crisis Centre, Complex PTSD and Sensory Motor Psychotherapy (an embodied approach to processing trauma).
She specialises in working with Complex trauma (also known as attachment trauma, resulting from ongoing issues in childhood).
She works with adults and also offers couples counselling using an integration of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS).
Bo’s approach to therapy and client work
Drawing from a variety of different modalities, she forms an integrated approach that can be adapted to your needs and preference. So that might involve an in-depth exploration of your past, or something that is more action oriented and behavioural. Or perhaps both at different points in the counselling process. Bo works in a way that incorporates a lot of mindful awareness and involves your whole being, your thinking mind as well as your embodied experience.
Her aim is to work collaboratively with you to help you (re)discover your own inner compass. Therapy can be short term or longer term. Most importantly however she aims to offer you unconditional support and give you permission to be fully yourself, in all your breadth and depth. To welcome al parts of you, including the ones that you find more difficult to accept. One of the main aims in the work is always to increase self-compassion so that it becomes possible to extend more and more kindness toward all aspects of yourself.
