Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN) in Inverness and the Highlands

Trigger point dry needling

A targeted treatment for muscular pain and tension

Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN) is a highly effective, evidence-based therapy used to relieve muscular pain, reduce tension, and restore natural movement. It is particularly beneficial for conditions where tight, overactive muscles and trigger points contribute to discomfort or restricted function. These may include arthritis, nerve irritation, muscular and ligament strains, herniated discs, and many persistent pain conditions.

The treatment is called “dry” needling because no medication or solution is injected. Instead, the fine, sterile needle itself creates a therapeutic response within the tissue, encouraging the body’s own healing processes.

How dry needling works

When a muscle is injured through overuse, poor posture, or sudden trauma, it often tightens to protect itself. This protective contraction can reduce blood flow, limit oxygen supply, and prevent the removal of waste products. Over time, this environment may lead to pain, stiffness, reduced flexibility, and the development of scar tissue that restricts normal movement.

By placing a very fine filament needle into a trigger point or contracted muscle, we create a precise and controlled response that helps to:

Release muscle tightness

Improve circulation and oxygen delivery

Reduce inflammation and chemical irritation

Restore normal muscle length and function

Break the cycle of ongoing pain

The local twitch response – A positive sign

A key feature of TDN is the “local twitch response,” a brief involuntary contraction of the muscle when the trigger point is stimulated. This response is both diagnostic and therapeutic. It signals that the tight muscle fibres are releasing, which helps to reset normal muscle activity, improve flexibility, and reduce pain.

The needles may remain in place for a short period – anywhere from a few seconds to around 20 minutes – depending on your treatment plan.

Supporting the body’s natural healing process

The gentle micro-stimulation created by trigger point dry needling encourages a local healing response. This increases blood flow to the area and activates the body’s natural repair mechanisms. At the same time, it can help calm the nervous system and stimulate the release of the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals, providing longer-lasting relief.

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Although both therapies use very fine, sterile needles, trigger point dry needling is based on modern Western medical research and focuses specifically on muscle and soft tissue function. Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and works with the body’s energy meridians. They are distinct therapies with different assessment methods and treatment goals.

Does the treatment hurt?

Most people feel very little when the needle is inserted. When the local twitch response occurs, you may experience a brief sensation such as a deep ache, cramp, or muscle “jump.” This lasts only a moment and is a normal and positive part of the treatment, indicating that the muscle is releasing.

Afterwards, the area may feel similar to post-exercise soreness for a short time, which usually settles quickly and is often followed by improved movement and reduced pain.
